COLCHESTER, VT — Vermont Clover FC will look to respond after suffering their first defeat of the season when they travel to Lynn, Massachusetts on May 23 to face Boston Street FC II in a crucial Northeast Division 1 matchup.
The Clover enter Friday’s contest with plenty of motivation after last weekend’s dramatic 2-1 loss to Boston Emeralds FC at Duffy Field, a result that saw the Emeralds leapfrog Vermont into first place in the table. Despite the setback, the Clover remain firmly in the title race and know a return to winning ways will be essential as the division battle intensifies heading into the second half of the campaign.
The defeat against the Emeralds marked the first time this season the Clover have dropped points, but there were still positives to take from the performance. Vermont created several dangerous chances throughout the match and once again showed the attacking quality that has made them one of the most dangerous sides in the league. However, late defensive lapses ultimately proved costly in a game decided by the finest of margins.
Friday’s matchup presents an opportunity not only to bounce back, but also to reassert themselves against an opponent they dominated earlier this month. When these two sides met at Duffy Field on May 3, the Clover produced one of their most complete performances of the season in a commanding 6-0 victory over Boston Street FC II. Vermont overwhelmed the visitors from the opening whistle with relentless attacking pressure and clinical finishing, while the defense secured another clean sheet in front of goalkeeper Lute Lillo.
The Clover attack continues to be powered by a number of in-form players, including winger Demunga Alfani, who has emerged as one of the side’s most dangerous attacking threats in recent weeks. Vermont’s ability to create chances from wide areas and in transition has been a defining feature of their strong start to the season, and they will look to rediscover that sharpness against Boston Street.
For Boston Street FC II, Friday’s contest represents a chance at redemption after their heavy defeat earlier in the month. The Massachusetts side has struggled defensively at times this season, but playing at home could provide an added boost as they attempt to play spoiler against one of the division’s title contenders.
The stakes remain high for both clubs, but especially for Vermont. With the Emeralds now sitting alone atop the Northeast Division 1 standings, every point becomes increasingly important in the race for the title. Another strong response on the road would keep the Clover firmly within striking distance as the season continues.
Kickoff from Lynn is scheduled for Friday night at 6:00 P.M.
