LEWISTON— Vermont Clover FC wasted little time turning promise into production, opening its inaugural campaign with a commanding 5–1 victory over Maine Legends FC on Saturday afternoon at Bates College.
After weeks of preparation, the Clover stepped into their first competitive match with a clear objective to translate training ground cohesion into a performance, and delivered a statement result built on attacking sharpness and collective resilience.
The breakthrough came early. In the 11th minute, captain Oliver Nigro latched onto a clipped ball over the top from Sean Butler, timing his run in behind before calmly finishing to give the visitors their first goal in club history.
Maine Legends responded just six minutes later to level the score, briefly halting Vermont’s momentum. But the Clover’s response reflected a group unfazed by adversity, quickly reasserting control through its attacking movement.
Moments after conceding, Demunga Alfani restored the lead. Meeting a long ball forward from Michael O’Connor, Alfani showed composure in front of goal, slotting past the keeper to make it 2–1.
The pressure continued to build. In the 24th minute, O’Connor added a goal of his own, rising to meet a driven cross from Henry Gibson and powering a header into the net to extend the advantage.
Defensively, the Clover were tested before the break, with goalkeeper Lute Lillo called into action. The Spanish shot-stopper preserved the two-goal cushion with a crucial penalty save, ensuring Vermont carried a 3–1 lead into halftime.
Out of the break, the Clover wasted little time widening the gap. Ten minutes into the second half, Alfani and Nigro combined in the final third, with Nigro finishing from 12 yards out to grab his second of the afternoon.
Just four minutes later, Alfani matched him. Controlling another long service from Butler, he bent a composed finish into the top right corner, capping a clinical display in front of goal.
With a four-goal cushion, Vermont settled into control, dictating possession and continuing to create chances, even as the scoreline remained unchanged through the final stages.
For head coach Brian Buczek, the performance reflected a group beginning to take shape, one capable of balancing attacking fluidity with defensive discipline under pressure.
The result also drew league-wide recognition, with Nigro, Alfani, Gibson, and Buczek all named to the UPSL Northeast Division Team of the Week following the opening weekend.
In their first-ever match, the Clover not only secured three points but delivered a performance that signaled their intent, announcing themselves to the conference with authority.
